The Creator Economy is Growing – and Bookkeeping Must Keep Up
The digital economy is expanding at an unprecedented pace. Online courses, e-books, paid newsletters, SaaS products and membership communities are redefining how people earn a living. Platforms like
Kajabi and
Substack have dramatically lowered the barrier to entry, enabling creators and entrepreneurs to monetise their expertise from anywhere in the world. At the same time, AI-powered development tools such as
Lovable,
Replit and
Cursor empower individuals to build and ship software products without large teams. For Irish entrepreneurs who accept payments through Stripe, having a reliable bookkeeping solution like SortMyBooks is essential for staying compliant with Revenue requirements.
The challenge for many digital creators is that while collecting payments is straightforward with Stripe, managing the accounting side — issuing proper invoices, tracking VAT and filing returns — requires a dedicated tool. This is where the combination of Stripe and SortMyBooks becomes particularly powerful.
What is Stripe? Its Role in the New Economy
Stripe is one of the world's leading payment processing platforms, founded in 2010 in San Francisco by Irish brothers Patrick and John Collison. According to the
Stripe Annual Update 2024, the platform continues its impressive growth trajectory, processing hundreds of billions of dollars annually for businesses across more than 40 countries.
As described in
Stripe: Thinking Like a Civilization, Stripe has positioned itself as the financial infrastructure of the internet. It handles everything from one-off card payments and recurring subscriptions to complex marketplace disbursements. Stripe supports over 135 currencies and offers tools for billing, fraud prevention, tax calculation and financial reporting.
However, Stripe does not generate invoices that comply with Irish Revenue requirements. It processes payments but leaves invoice generation and VAT compliance to the business. This is where a dedicated Irish accounting tool like SortMyBooks bridges the gap.
What is SortMyBooks and Why Use It?
SortMyBooks is an Irish cloud accounting platform specifically designed for small businesses, sole traders and accountants in Ireland. Built from the ground up to meet Irish Revenue requirements, SortMyBooks offers a streamlined approach to bookkeeping. Key features include:

Invoice Requirements in Ireland
Irish Revenue requires that VAT invoices contain the following mandatory elements, as set out in the Value-Added Tax Consolidation Act 2010:
-
Supplier's name, address and VAT registration number
-
Customer's name and address (and VAT number for B2B)
-
Invoice date and
unique sequential invoice number
-
Date of supply of goods or services
-
Description of goods or services supplied
-
Quantity and unit price exclusive of VAT
-
VAT rate(s) applied (23%, 13.5%, 9%, 4.8% or 0%) and the
VAT amount
-
Total amount payable including VAT
-
Currency if not in Euro
For cross-border EU transactions, additional information such as the customer's VAT identification number and a reference to the applicable VAT exemption rule (e.g. reverse charge mechanism) must be included. Irish businesses must retain copies of all issued invoices for a minimum of six years.
E-Invoicing: PEPPOL (B2G)
Ireland adopted mandatory e-invoicing for Business-to-Government (B2G) transactions in 2019, in line with EU Directive 2014/55/EU. B2G invoices are accepted in the
PEPPOL BIS Billing 3.0 format, which is an international standard for electronic invoicing used across Europe.
There is currently no mandatory B2B e-invoicing requirement in Ireland. However, the EU's
ViDA (VAT in the Digital Age) initiative is expected to introduce mandatory B2B e-invoicing and digital reporting across all EU member states by 2028-2030. Irish businesses are encouraged to start preparing for this transition by adopting digital invoicing practices now.
The Office of Government Procurement (OGP) manages the e-invoicing infrastructure for B2G transactions. Businesses supplying goods or services to Irish government bodies must be capable of issuing PEPPOL-compliant electronic invoices. SortMyBooks, as a cloud-based platform with API capabilities, can be part of a digital workflow that meets these requirements.
