Stripe Integration with Sage – How to Connect Stripe with Sage?

The creator economy demands connected financial tools

The creator economy has evolved dramatically. Today's digital entrepreneurs don't just sell e-books and courses – they build complete SaaS applications with AI tools like Lovable, Replit and Cursor. Others run paid newsletters on Substack or create professional training programmes on Kajabi. All of them need to collect payments professionally and generate invoices that comply with UK tax law. Stripe handles the payments brilliantly, but the invoicing and accounting side requires a dedicated system. Sage, the UK's most established accounting software provider, is a natural partner. The question is: how do you connect them?

What is Stripe? Its role in the new economy

Stripe is the world's leading payment infrastructure platform. According to the Stripe Annual Update 2024, Stripe processes over one trillion dollars in annual transactions across more than 40 countries. The analysis Stripe: Thinking Like a Civilization describes how Stripe has become the financial backbone of the internet – a comprehensive infrastructure for payments, subscriptions, billing and treasury.

For UK businesses, Stripe supports card payments, Direct Debit, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Klarna and more. Its extensively documented API allows automation of everything from simple one-off charges to complex subscription models with metered billing, trials and automatic renewals. Stripe is the preferred choice for tech-driven companies and digital creators who want to offer a world-class payment experience.

Can you connect Sage with Stripe?

Sage provides a comprehensive Developer API with REST endpoints for invoices, contacts, products, ledger entries and more. This makes it technically feasible to build an automated workflow where Stripe payment events trigger invoice creation and bookkeeping entries in Sage.

There is no native built-in integration between Stripe and Sage's core accounting products. While some third-party apps on the Sage Marketplace may offer partial connectivity, a full end-to-end integration requires a solution that reads Stripe webhooks, maps customer and transaction data, calculates VAT correctly and creates compliant invoices in Sage.

striptu.com specialises in exactly this. As a global platform that connects Stripe with local accounting systems across Europe, striptu.com can build a fully functional Stripe–Sage integration in just seven days, with an affordable subscription plan that includes transaction data orchestration and ongoing support.

Invoice requirements in the United Kingdom

According to HMRC guidelines and the Value Added Tax Act 1994, a valid VAT invoice in the UK must include:

- Supplier's name, address and VAT registration number
- Customer's name and address (plus VAT number for B2B where applicable)
- Unique sequential invoice number
- Invoice date and date of supply if different
- Description of goods or services provided
- Quantity and unit price excluding VAT
- VAT rate: 20% (standard), 5% (reduced) or 0% (zero-rated)
- Total VAT amount charged, broken down by rate
- Total amount including and excluding VAT
- Currency of the transaction
- Discount details if a discount applies
- Reverse charge notation where applicable

The UK recognises three invoice types: full VAT invoices (over £250), simplified invoices (under £250) and modified invoices (retail over £250). All invoices must be retained for a minimum of 6 years.

Making Tax Digital (MTD) in the United Kingdom

The UK operates the Making Tax Digital (MTD) programme under HMRC, which is reshaping how businesses manage their tax obligations digitally.

MTD for VAT: mandatory since April 2019 for businesses above the £85,000 threshold, extended to all VAT-registered businesses from April 2022. Requirements include digital record-keeping, MTD-compatible software for filing VAT returns, and digital links between all records.

MTD for Income Tax (ITSA): launching April 2026 for self-employed individuals and landlords earning above £50,000, extending to those above £30,000 from April 2027. This will require quarterly digital updates to HMRC.

The UK does not mandate e-invoicing in the EU sense. E-invoices are accepted voluntarily via PEPPOL, but there is no B2B or B2G obligation. Post-Brexit, the UK is not subject to the EU's ViDA directive, though HMRC continues to explore digital reporting enhancements.

Sage is one of the UK's leading MTD-compatible software providers. Sage Business Cloud Accounting and Sage 50 both support direct VAT return filing to HMRC via MTD, making them an excellent choice for compliance.

Summary

Sage is the gold standard for UK accounting software, with unmatched depth in bookkeeping, VAT management and MTD compliance. Combined with Stripe's world-class payment infrastructure, the two platforms form a powerful combination for digital businesses. While there is no native integration, the comprehensive APIs on both sides and the support of striptu.com make it possible to automate the entire payment-to-invoice flow in just seven days. With MTD requirements expanding and digital record-keeping becoming mandatory, having Stripe and Sage connected is a smart investment for any UK-based creator or entrepreneur.
