The Creator Economy is Growing – and Accounting Needs to Follow
The digital economy is booming. Online courses, e-books, paid newsletters, SaaS products and membership sites are transforming how people build businesses. Platforms like
Kajabi and
Substack have dramatically lowered the barrier to entry for creators and digital entrepreneurs. AI-powered tools such as
Lovable,
Replit and
Cursor enable anyone to build software products without traditional development teams.
For Irish entrepreneurs who collect payments through Stripe, the accounting side of the business can quickly become a challenge. Revenue compliance, VAT returns and proper invoicing all require a dedicated tool. Big Red Cloud is one of Ireland's most established cloud accounting platforms, making it a natural companion for Stripe-powered businesses.
What is Stripe? Its Role in the New Economy
Stripe is a global payment processing platform founded in 2010 by Irish brothers Patrick and John Collison. According to the
Stripe Annual Update 2024, the company continues to grow rapidly, processing hundreds of billions of dollars for businesses across more than 40 countries. As described in
Stripe: Thinking Like a Civilization, Stripe has established itself as the financial infrastructure of the internet.
Stripe supports one-off payments, recurring subscriptions, marketplace payouts and more. It handles over 135 currencies and provides tools for billing, fraud detection, tax calculation and financial reporting. However, Stripe does not generate invoices that comply with Irish Revenue requirements. It processes payments but leaves the responsibility for issuing compliant invoices and managing VAT to the business owner. This gap is precisely where a local accounting tool like Big Red Cloud comes into play.

Invoice Requirements in Ireland
Irish Revenue requires that VAT invoices contain specific mandatory elements, as defined in the Value-Added Tax Consolidation Act 2010:
-
Supplier's name, address and VAT registration number
-
Customer's name and address (and VAT number for B2B transactions)
-
Invoice date and
unique sequential invoice number
-
Date of supply of goods or services
-
Description of goods or services supplied
-
Quantity and unit price exclusive of VAT
-
VAT rate(s) applied — Ireland uses rates of 23% (standard), 13.5% (reduced), 9% (second reduced), 4.8% (livestock) and 0% (zero-rated)
-
VAT amount per rate
-
Total amount payable including VAT
-
Currency if not in Euro
For intra-EU supplies, the invoice must also include the customer's VAT identification number and a reference to the applicable reverse charge rule. Businesses must retain copies of all invoices for a minimum of six years.
E-Invoicing: PEPPOL (B2G)
Ireland implemented mandatory e-invoicing for Business-to-Government (B2G) transactions in 2019, in compliance with EU Directive 2014/55/EU. Government suppliers must issue invoices in the
PEPPOL BIS Billing 3.0 format, an international standard used throughout Europe for electronic document exchange.
There is currently no mandatory B2B e-invoicing requirement in Ireland. However, the EU's
ViDA (VAT in the Digital Age) initiative, expected to be implemented between 2028 and 2030, will likely introduce mandatory e-invoicing and real-time digital reporting for B2B transactions across all EU member states. Irish businesses are well advised to start adopting digital invoicing practices in advance of these changes.
The Office of Government Procurement (OGP) manages Ireland's B2G e-invoicing infrastructure. Big Red Cloud, with its API capabilities and cloud-based architecture, can serve as part of a digital invoicing workflow that meets current and future compliance requirements.
